The Reformation Wall - Geneva, Switzerland

The Reformation Wall is in the grounds of the University of Geneva, which was founded by John Calvin, and was built to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Calvin’s birth and the 350th anniversary of the university’s establishment. It is built into the old city walls of Geneva, and the monument’s location was designed to represent the city of Geneva’s integral importance to the Reformation.

The center grouping of the monument represent (from left to right):

  • William Farel (1489 – 1565): Brought Calvin to Geneva and the first to preach the Reformation in Geneva
  • John Calvin (1509 – 1564): Leader of the Reformation movement
  • Theodore Beza (1519 – 1605): Succeeded Calvin as leader of the Swiss Reformation
  • John Knox (1513 – 1572): Taught in Geneva before taking the Reformation to Scotland

The Reformer’s Wall is great. In fact, have a look at the background of my avatar… recognise the texture?

I’ve not read anything concrete on this, but I was under the impression that the reason Calvin has his fingers in the Bible was to emphasise his passion for expository preaching. If you recall anything, or have read anything, I’d love the link.

Nathan, I never noticed your background texture before. Very creative.

A couple from church went on the Reformation tour with John MacArthur a couple of years backs and the tour guide mentioned the significance of Calvin’s finger in the Bible and his passion for expository preaching.
